Hoje eu acordei e estava um dia lindo.
Today I woke up and it was a beautiful day.
Eu fiz uma rápida pesquisa no meu celular para verificar se o Temer continuava preso – com o Gilmar Mendes e seu histórico de distribuir habeas corpus para os poderosos, a gente nunca sabe. Temer seguia preso, e tudo indicava que um lindo fim de semana estava chegando.
I did a quick search on my phone to confirm that Temer was still in jail—with Gilmar Mendes’ history of granting habeas corpus to powerful men, one never knows. Temer was still imprisoned, and all signs pointed to a lovely weekend ahead.
Eu cheguei ao escritório e ao longo do dia consegui resolver todas as pendências da semana. Eu tive que sacrificar o meu horário de almoço, e eu levo as minhas refeições muito a sério, mas valeu a pena. Sair do escritório sabendo que tudo está feito e organizado é uma grande alívio.
I got to the office and over the course of the day managed to tie up all the week’s loose ends. I had to give up my lunch hour, and I take my meals very seriously, but it was worth it. Leaving the office knowing that everything was finished and in order is a huge relief.
Era sexta-feira, ou seja, dia de encontrar todo mundo e beber algumas cervejas e caipirinhas com os meus amores. Como eu sacrifiquei o meu almoço, ao sair do trabalho eu parei em dois lugares diferentes para comer um pouco de tudo, depois dei umas quatro voltas no mesmo quarteirão enquanto falava ao telefone com minha amiga Ju. Era aniversário dela.
It was Friday, which is to say, the day to meet up with everyone and drink some beers and caipirinhas with my loves. Since I’d sacrificed my lunch hour, I stopped in two different places after work to eat a little bit of everything, then I circled the same block four times while catching up with my friend Ju by phone. It was her birthday.
Após ter comido bastante e ter andado em círculos planejando a festa da Ju, eu tive a brilhante ideia de pegar uma bike para ir à casa do meu amigo Lucas. Afinal, à noite estava linda e Temer seguia preso.
After having eaten a ton and walked in circles planning Ju’s birthday celebrations, I had the brilliant idea to grab a bike and head over to my friend Lucas’ house. After all, the night was lovely and Temer was still in prison.
Eu peguei a bicicleta em Ipanema. O plano era pedalar até a Lapa ouvindo a Beyoncé cantar loucamente no meu fone de ouvido. Estávamos eu e Beyonce pedalando por Copacabana quando eu percebi que minha bolsa estava prestes a cair da bicicleta, eu tive a ideia de consertar enquanto pedalava, cantava e dançava.
I picked up the bike in Ipanema. The plan was to pedal my way over to Lapa, listening to Beyonce singing madly on my headphones. Beyoncé and I were pedaling through Copacabana when I noticed that my bag was about to fall out of the basket, and I had the idea to adjust it while I pedaled, sang, and danced.
Não foi uma boa ideia!
Not a good idea!
Ao consertar a minha bolsa, eu acidentalmente passei por um buraco e perdi o controle da bicicleta. Quando eu me dei conta, eu estava caindo da bike em câmera lenta em frente a um hotel. Óbvio que tinha um número enorme de pessoas testemunhando essa cena patética. Porque eu nunca me envergonho em um lugar vazio.
While adjusting my bag, I accidentally rolled over a pothole and lost control of the bicycle. By the time I realized what was happening, I was falling from the bike in slow motion in front of a hotel. Obviously, this hotel had a huge number of people bearing witness to the pathetic scene. Because I never manage to embarrass myself in an empty place.
Como se não fosse o suficiente, um moço e uma moça que estavam bem em frente vieram me ajudar. Ele me perguntou se eu estava bem, em inglês, pegou a minha bicicleta e me ajudou a levantar. Eu ainda estava tentando entender o que estava acontecendo, não prestei atenção neles, estava muito ocupada pensando em sair daquele lugar o mais rápido possível.
As though that weren’t enough, a young man and woman came over to help. He asked if I was okay, in English, picked up the bike and helped me get up. I was still trying to figure out what was going on, I didn’t pay them any mind, I was too busy trying to get out of that place as quickly as possible.
Ao retirar a minha cara do chão eu olhei para essas duas pessoas abençoadas que me ajudaram e me deparei com esse homem maravilhoso. É óbvio que eu cai da bicicleta, me machuquei e me envergonhei na frente de um dos homens mais lindos que eu já vi, e a namorada dele. Faz parte do meu charme!
In the process of picking my face up off of the ground, I finally looked at the two blessed people who had helped me and found myself staring at that marvelous man. Obviously, I had to fall off a bicycle, bang myself up and embarrass myself at the feet of one of the loveliest men I’ve ever seen—and his girlfriend. It’s all part of my charm!
Eu disse: “eu estou fine,” misturando o inglês com o português. Peguei minha bicicleta e minha dignidade, e fui embora.
I said: “eu estou fine,” mixing my English up with my Portuguese. I grabbed my bicycle and my dignity, and got out of there.
Eu segui pedalando até o ponto de ônibus de Botafogo e fui ao hospital cuidar do dedo que eu tinha machucado – o certo teria sido largar a bicicleta em qualquer lugar viável. Mas a minha teimosia não permitiu. Pedalei pelo meu orgulho ferido.
I biked over to the Botafogo bus stop and stopped by the hospital there to get my injured finger looked at. It probably would have been better to have dropped the bike off at the nearest station, but my stubbornness wouldn’t allow it. I pedaled for my wounded pride.
Depois de vinte minutos rindo e compartilhando histórias embaraçosas com a enfermeira, eu sai do hospital com uma receita médica e um dedo enfaixado.
After twenty minutes spent laughing and sharing embarrassing stories with a nurse, I left the hospital with a prescription and a bandaged finger.
Substitui os remédios por caipirinhas e cervejas e substitui o descanso por risadas e uma festa incrível.
I swapped out the medicine for caipirinhas and beer, and the bed rest for laughter and a great party.
Meus amigos e eu conversamos e bebemos; eles riram de mim e toda a história do acidente – como os ótimos amigos que eles são – e depois decidimos andar um pouco sem rumo pelas ruas do centro da cidade. Descobrimos uma festa de música eletrônica em um lugar que nunca havíamos frequentado. Podíamos jurar que já conhecíamos todos os lugares desse Rio de Janeiro e que não podíamos ser surpreendidos. Estávamos errados.
My friends and I chatted and drank; they laughed at me and the story of the accident—like the excellent friends they are—and later we decided to walk aimlessly around the city center. We discovered an electronica party in a place we’d never been. We could have sworn that we knew all the places in Rio de Janeiro, that we couldn’t be surprised anymore. We were wrong.
Infelizmente, um dos meus amigos passou muito mal e eu tive que levá-lo para casa. Ele jurava que a energia do ambiente fez mal para ele, porque ele é muito sensitivo. Achei que podería ter alguma coisa a ver com todas as bebidas que ele tomou. Mas quem sou eu para julgar?! Eu disse que ele estava certíssimo e pegamos o nosso táxi rumo ao que seria o fim da noite.
Unfortunately, one of my friends got very sick and I had to take him home. He swore that the place’s energy had done him in, because he is very sensitive. It could also, I thought, have had something to do with all the drinks he had had. But who am I to judge?! I told him that he was totally right and we got in a cab towards what would be the end of the night.
Acordei no dia seguinte com uma dor absurda no corpo todo, fruto da minha aventura. Mas sem arrependimento.
I woke up the next day with an absurd amount of pain all over, the fruit of my adventure. But without any regret.
